Cinquefoil contains large amounts of tannins and is historically used as an astringent. It has been used in mouthwashes, skin washes, diaper rash salves. It was also used for diarrhea, dysentery, and tooth problems.

The herb was said to scare off witches, but was also commonly found in witches' gardens. It was often used in protection and banishments.
