Botanical Name: Artemisia absinthium
Common names: absinthium, green ginger, absinthe, old woman, southernwood, wormwood
Wormwood is claimed to have antifungal, neuroprotective, insecticidal, antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, antimalarial, antidepressant, and hepatoprotective properties. It is best known as an ingredient in absinthe, but it's also been utilized for its bitterness, flavor, and green hue in many other liqueurs and aperitifs, including vermouth. Wormwood was used in traditional European herbalism to support the digestive system. In ancient Greece it was utilized for intestinal parasites and as a general wellness tonic. Western herbalists use it for dyspepsia, as a bitter to counteract poor appetite, for various infectious diseases, Crohn's disease, and IgA nephropathy.
